On Thursday during First Minister’s questions Douglas raised the closure of the Stoneywood mill in Aberdeen.
Speaking in the chamber, Douglas highlighted that when redundancies were announced at sites across the central belt the First Minister was quick to visit the affected businesses. Calling out the First Minister, Douglas noted that “when it’s jobs in Aberdeen, you are nowhere to be seen and we’re met with a wall of silence”.
This is in stark contrast to the First Minister’s actions in 2017 when she flew back from Germany when workers faced redundancies at the BiFab engineering firm in Fife.
Prior to questioning the First Minister Douglas described the Mill's closure as a "hammer blow" to the North East of Scotland. Speaking to the Press and Journal Douglas said that "Stoneywood has been a very successful business in Aberdeen for more than 250 years and everything must be done to safeguard jobs and protect its future".
In his contributions to the chamber, Douglas called on the Scottish Government to do more to ensure the mill can be saved or provide support for those affected to find alternative employment.
Encouraging the SNP to take action Douglas said that “the loss of over 300 jobs needs more than the usual PACE response”.
